AI visibility audit: the GEO audit that scores your site the way AI crawlers read it
The GEO audit is Citeon AI's site diagnosis: a crawl of up to 40 pages done the way AI crawlers read a site, without JavaScript, scored on six weighted dimensions with a rubric that is published on this page, and written up as a severity ranked issue list, quick wins and a 30 day plan in a PDF. It answers the question the daily measurement raises: why the engines read other people's pages instead of yours.
- Six dimensions, weighted: AI citability 25, brand authority 20, E-E-A-T 20, technical GEO 15, schema 10, platform 10. The formulas are on this page.
- A crawl of up to 40 pages without JavaScript, because that is how AI crawlers read a site. A 404 is reported as a 404; a soft 404 is caught.
- In 7,552 measured answers the business's own site is cited in 0.6%. The audit is built to find out why.
What the audit is
The daily measurement tells you where you lose: which questions name a competitor, which sources the engines read, where your own pages never appear. The audit tells you why. It fetches your site the way OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or Googlebot do, without running JavaScript, reads what is actually there, and scores it against six things the engines weigh: whether a page holds a passage an answer can lift, whether the entity is known elsewhere on the web, whether the site shows who is behind it, whether the crawlers that decide citation are allowed in, whether the structured data says what the page says, and whether the business exists on the platforms the engines cite.
The result is one number from 0 to 100, six dimension scores behind it, and a written report. The number is for the trend; the six scores are for the work, because a site can be Good overall and Critical on the one dimension that blocks everything.
The six dimensions and their weights
Published in full, because a score you cannot reproduce is a score you cannot trust. Each dimension is 0 to 100 from the checks listed; the total is the weighted sum.
| Dimension | Weight | What is checked |
|---|---|---|
| AI citability | 25 | Share of pages with a self contained passage of 40 to 170 words that carries a number or a unit; FAQ pages; question headings; depth in words per page |
| Brand authority | 20 | Third party sites that rank for the brand; sameAs entity links; whether the site itself ranks first for its name; the measured AI mention rate |
| E-E-A-T | 20 | About, contact and privacy pages; a phone or email on the site; author and date on articles; alt text on images; the share of thin pages |
| Technical GEO | 15 | OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Googlebot and Bingbot allowed; llms.txt; a sitemap on the live host; canonicals; server side rendering; https; errors; homepage response under 800 ms |
| Schema | 10 | Organization markup; local business with address and hours where it applies; FAQ and breadcrumb markup; sameAs; validity and the URL on the right host |
| Platform | 10 | The measured AI mention rate; presence on surfaces the engines cite (Google Maps, Tripadvisor, TheFork, Trustpilot, Yelp, G2, Capterra, LinkedIn, YouTube, Reddit, Wikipedia); social metadata |
Weights sum to 100. The technical list names the crawlers that decide whether a site can be cited; the training crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended) are not scored, because blocking them does not remove a site from AI answers.
How the crawl works
Pages come from the sitemap and from the site's own links, up to 40, with files, login, cart and admin paths skipped. Each page is fetched exactly as listed, UTF-8 and percent encoded, without JavaScript: a page that only renders in the browser scores as the empty document the crawlers see. A 404 is reported as that address not existing; a page that returns 200 and says not found is detected as a soft 404. The homepage response time, https, canonicals and the robots rules per crawler are read on the live host, so a sitemap that points at a staging domain is caught.
Two search calls add what the site cannot show about itself: whether it ranks first for its own name, and which third party sites rank beside it. The measured AI mention rate comes from the daily scans, when the workspace has them.
What the report contains
| Part | What it holds |
|---|---|
| Executive summary | What the score means for this site, in its market language |
| Issues, up to 12 | Severity ranked: critical blocks citation or indexing site wide, high is a major lost opportunity, medium a clear gain, low a refinement. Each with the category it belongs to and the fix |
| Quick wins | What can be done this week |
| 30 day plan | The order of the rest |
| Six dimension scores | With two or three sentences per dimension on what drove the number |
| The PDF | Rendered from the HTML report and stored as a deliverable in the workspace |
The narrative is written from the crawl facts only, under the rule that nothing the crawl did not see may be named: no invented pages, no assumed platform. When our servers were refused under a crawler's name, the report says so as one issue to check, never as a verdict.
What a good score is
| Total | Label |
|---|---|
| 90 to 100 | Excellent |
| 75 to 89 | Good |
| 60 to 74 | Fair |
| 40 to 59 | Poor |
| Below 40 | Critical |
Read the six scores before the total. A site with strong pages and a robots.txt that blocks PerplexityBot is Good on citability and Critical on technical access, and the technical fix is the one that moves the daily measurement first.
Score only what the crawl saw. Name only pages that exist.
Citeon AI, the audit rule
The audit and the free checker
They answer different questions. The free checker asks three engines your buyers' questions and emails what they answered: where you are named, who is named instead, which sources they used. The audit crawls your site and explains the result. The daily AI visibility tool then measures what each fix changed. On the Optimize plan the audit runs monthly with a PDF each time.
Questions people ask
What is an AI visibility audit?
A diagnosis of why AI engines do or do not cite a site: whether its pages hold passages an engine can lift, whether the crawlers that decide citation are allowed in, whether the entity is described consistently across the web, and whether the site carries the signals of expertise and trust the engines weigh. Citeon AI's version crawls up to 40 pages the way AI crawlers do, without JavaScript, and scores six dimensions with a fixed rubric.
How is a GEO audit different from an SEO audit?
An SEO audit asks whether Google can index and rank pages. A GEO audit asks whether an answer engine can quote them: self contained passages of 40 to 170 words with a number or a unit, question headings, FAQ pages, author and date on articles, the AI search crawlers allowed in robots.txt, an llms.txt file, and a presence on the platforms the engines cite. Technical SEO is one of the six dimensions, weighted 15 of 100.
What does the audit crawl?
Up to 40 pages, found through the sitemap and the site's own links, fetched exactly as listed, without running JavaScript, because that is how AI crawlers read a site. A page that returns 404 is reported as such; a page that says not found while returning 200 is detected as a soft 404 and not mistaken for content.
What is a good GEO score?
The total is 0 to 100 and carries a label: Excellent from 90, Good from 75, Fair from 60, Poor from 40, Critical below. The report shows the six dimension scores separately, so a site can be Good overall and Critical on technical access, which is the case that matters most.
How often does the audit run?
Monthly on the Optimize plan, with a client ready PDF stored as a deliverable each time. The free checker is a different thing: it asks three engines your buyers' questions and reports the answers; it does not crawl the site.
Is the narrative written by AI?
The scores are computed by a fixed rubric from what the crawl found. The executive summary, the issue list and the plan are written by a language model from those facts only, with the instruction to name nothing the crawl did not see, and every issue carries the category and the fix it belongs to.
