ChatGPT SEO: how ChatGPT chooses its sources, and how to get your business cited

ChatGPT SEO is the work that gets a business named, recommended and cited when someone asks ChatGPT who to buy from. ChatGPT searches the web through partner search providers, ranks what it finds on factors OpenAI does not publish, and cites a few pages. In our data it names the business asked about in 31.8% of answers and cites the business's own site in 0.3%.

In short
  • OpenAI: ChatGPT searches when a question would benefit from current information, through partner search providers, with the query rewritten first.
  • One published requirement: allow OAI-SearchBot. Sites that block it are not shown in ChatGPT search answers. Ranking factors are not published; placement is not guaranteed.
  • In our data ChatGPT names the business in 31.8% of answers, recommends it in 21.6%, and cites its own site in 0.3%.
  • It reads reddit.com, en.wikipedia.org, github.com most.

What is ChatGPT SEO?

The phrase borrows the old name for new work. There is no ranking in ChatGPT; there is an answer, written for one person, that names a few businesses and often picks one. ChatGPT SEO is everything that makes your business one of the names: being on the pages ChatGPT reads, being described accurately there, and having a site ChatGPT's search crawler can reach. It is one engine's slice of generative engine optimization.

ChatGPT may search the web automatically when your question would benefit from current information.

A buying question nearly always qualifies: who is good, what it costs, which to choose. Users can also start a search by hand. When ChatGPT does not search, it answers from what the model learned in training, which is older and less specific; for a business, the search path is the one that matters, because it is where today's reviews and listings come in.

How does ChatGPT choose its sources?

ChatGPT search sometimes partners with other search providers. When it does, ChatGPT search typically rewrites your query into one or more targeted queries that it sends those providers. [...] ChatGPT ranks search results using multiple factors intended to help users find relevant, reliable information. Placement is not guaranteed.

Three things follow. First, the query your buyer typed is not the query that gets searched: ChatGPT rewrites it, often into several, and may add a location it infers from the IP address. Second, the search providers are partners, and the privacy policies OpenAI points to are Microsoft's and Shopify's, not Google's. Third, the ranking is OpenAI's own and unpublished, so the only way to know what it picks is to ask it and read the answer.

What it picks, in our data, is the open web's discussion of you rather than your own page:

What OpenAI says a site must allow

To make a website eligible for inclusion, allow OAI-Searchbot to crawl the site and confirm that the website host or content delivery network allows traffic from OpenAI's published searchbot IP addresses.

OpenAI Help Center

OpenAI runs three crawlers with three jobs. OAI-SearchBot surfaces websites in ChatGPT's search results, and sites that opt out of it are not shown in search answers. GPTBot gathers training data, and blocking it is about training, not search. ChatGPT-User fetches pages when a user asks for one and is not an automatic crawler. A site that blocks all bots to keep its content out of training also removes itself from ChatGPT's answers; the two decisions are separate and both are made in robots.txt.

ChatGPT cites a business's own site less often than any other engine we measure, 0.3% of the time, while naming the business in 31.8% of answers. Its answers come from pages about you. Asked the same question on the same day, ChatGPT and another engine name the same business first 26 to 32.3% of the time, so a ChatGPT result says little about Gemini or Perplexity.

ChatGPT and local businesses

OpenAI's help page says ChatGPT may use an approximate location from the IP address for local results, may rewrite "restaurants near me" into "top restaurants San Francisco", and, for restaurants, shows reservation availability from OpenTable, Resy or Yelp where the business is listed. For a local business that means two things: the question ChatGPT searches is a city-level query, so the pages that rank for "best X in [city]" are what it reads; and a listing on the reservation and review platforms it integrates with is a direct route into the answer.

How to get your business cited by ChatGPT

  1. Let OAI-SearchBot in. Check robots.txt and your CDN. This is the one rule OpenAI publishes, and a surprising number of sites fail it by blocking all AI bots at once.
  2. Be on the pages ChatGPT reads. reddit.com, en.wikipedia.org, github.com in our data; for local trades, the review and booking platforms of your sector. Answers are built from these, not from your homepage.
  3. Answer the rewritten query. ChatGPT searches "best accountant Rotterdam freelancers", not your brand. Have a page that is the honest answer to that query, with the facts a model can quote: prices, scope, location, proof.
  4. Keep the facts consistent. ChatGPT cross-reads sources. A price on your site that disagrees with your directory listing costs you the recommendation.
  5. Measure it daily. Answers change from day to day. One check is noise; a rolling average over four weeks is a trend.

ChatGPT SEO tools

A ChatGPT SEO tool asks ChatGPT your buyers' questions on a schedule and records what came back: named, position, recommended, the sources cited, the competitors named. Citeon AI reads ChatGPT's own interface for this, daily, in your buyers' country, next to Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, keeps every answer, and turns each losing question into a fix on your site. Questions people ask

Does ChatGPT use Google?

OpenAI's help page says ChatGPT search sometimes partners with other search providers and rewrites your question into one or more targeted queries for them; the privacy policies it points to are Microsoft's and Shopify's. It does not name Google. Our data agrees that ChatGPT's sources differ from Google's top results: the 2026 studies put the overlap between AI-cited URLs and Google's top ten at about 12%.

How does ChatGPT rank sources?

OpenAI's words: ChatGPT ranks search results using multiple factors intended to help users find relevant, reliable information, and placement is not guaranteed. In our measured answers the pages it cites most are Reddit, Wikipedia and GitHub, plus review and trade directories for local questions.

How do I get my website into ChatGPT search?

OpenAI gives one requirement: allow OAI-SearchBot to crawl the site, and make sure your host or CDN allows traffic from OpenAI's published searchbot IP addresses. Sites that block OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers. After that it comes down to being a page worth citing, and being present on the pages ChatGPT already reads.

Does GPTBot matter for ChatGPT SEO?

GPTBot is OpenAI's training crawler, not the search crawler. Blocking it tells OpenAI not to use your content for training models; it does not affect whether OAI-SearchBot can surface your site in ChatGPT search. The two are separate user agents with separate robots.txt rules.

Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor and not me?

Because of what it found, not what you wrote. In our data ChatGPT names the business asked about in 31.8% of answers and recommends it in 21.6%, and it cites the business's own site in 0.3%. It builds the answer from third-party pages, reviews, forums, directories, and names the businesses those pages recommend.

What is a ChatGPT SEO tool?

Software that puts your buyers' questions to ChatGPT on a schedule, reads the answers, and records whether you are named, where, whether you are recommended, and which sources it used. Citeon AI does this daily for ChatGPT alongside Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, and turns each losing question into a fix on your site.
