What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work that makes your page the answer an engine returns, instead of one link among ten: a featured snippet, a voice reply, a cited passage in an AI answer. It is measured in answers given, not positions earned.

In short
  • AEO targets the answer itself: snippet, voice reply, cited passage. SEO targets the ranking; GEO targets the generated recommendation.
  • Google: a page cannot be marked as a featured snippet; its systems decide. For AI Overviews, no markup or files are needed.
  • FAQ rich results are gone for almost everyone: Google limits them to government and health sites and ends them on 7 May 2026.
  • In our data the engines cite a business's own site in 0.6% of answers; the sources they use are reddit.com, en.wikipedia.org, youtube.com, linkedin.com, github.com.

What is AEO?

Answer engine optimization is the older cousin of GEO. The term dates from the years when Google started answering questions directly on the results page, in a featured snippet, and when voice assistants began reading one answer aloud. An answer engine is any system that returns one answer instead of a list: a snippet, a voice reply, and now Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity.

AEO asks one question of each of them: did the engine use my page? The unit of success is a page used as the answer or cited as a source. That is narrower than SEO, which counts positions, and narrower than GEO, which counts whether the generated answer names and recommends the business at all.

Where do answers appear?

Answer surfaceWhat it showsWhat AEO counts
Featured snippetA passage from one page above the results, also inside "People also ask"Your page is the passage
Voice assistantOne answer read aloud, usually from a snippet-like sourceYour page is the answer
Google AI Overviews and AI ModeA generated summary with supporting linksYour page is among the links; your business is named
ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, PerplexityA generated answer, with sources when the engine searched the webYour page is cited; your business is named

Google systems determine whether a page would make a good featured snippet for a user's search request, and if so, elevates it.

You cannot mark a page as a snippet, and you cannot mark it as an AI source. You can only make it the page the system would choose.

How do answer engines choose an answer?

Google says the same thing about its two answer surfaces: the system decides, and no special markup helps. For AI Overviews and AI Mode its documentation says there are no additional requirements and no new files or markup to create; a page needs to be indexed and eligible for a snippet. For FAQ rich results, once the easiest AEO trick, Google now shows them only for government and health sites and discontinues them from 7 May 2026.

What the engines do read is the open web, and not evenly. Across our 7,552 measured answers the sources cited most are reddit.com, en.wikipedia.org, youtube.com, linkedin.com, github.com. The business's own site is cited in 0.6% of answers. So the answer to "how do they choose" is, for most businesses: from pages about you more than from pages by you.

AEO vs SEO

SEO wants a page to rank for a topic. AEO wants a page to be the one answer to a question. The page is the same page, written more plainly: the question in the heading, the answer in the first sentence, the evidence after it, no preamble. Google's helpful content guidance describes that page too, which is why AEO rarely needs anything SEO would not.

The measurement differs. A page can rank third and never be the snippet. A page can be the snippet and send fewer clicks, because the question was settled on the results page. AEO counts answers given; it accepts that some answers earn no visit and earn the name instead.

AEO vs GEO

Both live in generated answers now, and the names are often used for the same work. The useful distinction is the question each asks of an answer:

  • AEO: did the engine use or cite my page? A citation.
  • GEO: did the engine name and recommend my business? A mention.

They come apart in the data: named in 35.2% of answers, own site cited in 0.6%. The engines build answers from third-party pages and then name the businesses those pages talk about. For most businesses the mention is the number that moves sales, and the pages that drive it are reviews, directories, forums and articles, not the homepage. Read the full comparison.

What is AEO in marketing?

In a marketing plan, AEO is the content discipline for the questions buyers ask before they choose: "what does X cost", "X vs Y", "best X for Z", "is X worth it". Each question gets a page that answers it in the first lines and proves it below, and each page is checked afterwards for whether the engines used it. It is not a channel with its own budget; it is a way of writing, and a way of measuring, that makes the same pages work on Google, in snippets and in AI answers at once.

How to do AEO

  1. One question per page. The question as the title and the H1, in the words people type. A page that answers six questions is the answer to none.
  2. Answer first. Two sentences at the top that could stand alone as the answer. Everything else is evidence.
  3. Evidence that can be quoted. Numbers with their sample, a table, a named source. Engines lift sentences; give them sentences worth lifting.
  4. Headings as questions. Each H2 is a question someone asks, so a passage can be matched to it.
  5. Be on the pages the engines read. Reviews, directories, forums, comparison articles. Your own page is cited in 0.6% of answers; the rest come from elsewhere.
  6. Measure the answers, not the rank. Ask the engines your questions on a schedule and record whether they used you. Nothing else tells you.

Answer engine optimization tools

An AEO tool does one thing a rank tracker cannot: it asks the engines the questions and reads the answers. The measures that matter are per answer, per engine, per day: named, position among the brands, recommended, cited, and the list of sources used. Citeon AI records all five across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, keeps every answer, and turns each losing question into a fix on your site. Questions people ask

What does AEO stand for?

Answer engine optimization. An answer engine is anything that returns one answer instead of a list of links: a featured snippet, a voice assistant, Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT. AEO is the work that makes your page the answer it returns. (In customs and trade, AEO means Authorised Economic Operator, which is unrelated.)

What is AEO in marketing?

The practice of writing and structuring pages so that answer engines use them: one question per page, the answer in the first sentences, evidence after it, and a measurement of whether the engines actually used the page. It sits next to SEO (being ranked) and GEO (being named and recommended in generated answers).

AEO vs SEO: what is the difference?

SEO wants a page to rank for a topic; AEO wants a page to be the single answer to a question. The page is the same page, written more plainly. The measurement differs: SEO counts positions and clicks, AEO counts answers given, including answers that send no click because the question was settled on the results page.

Is AEO the same as GEO?

They overlap but ask different questions of an answer. AEO asks: did the engine use my page as the answer or cite it? GEO asks: did the generated answer name and recommend my business? In our data a business is named in 35.2% of AI answers but its own site is cited in 0.6%, so the two come apart often.

Do FAQ schema or special markup help AEO?

Not any more for Google's rich results. Google's documentation says FAQ rich results are shown only for well-known government and health sites and will no longer appear from 7 May 2026. Google also says no new files or markup are needed for AI Overviews. Markup can still describe a page accurately; it does not make it the answer. The text does.
