Google AI Overviews: what they are and how to appear in them

Google AI Overviews is the AI-generated summary Google shows above its results, with links to the pages it drew on, when its systems judge that generative AI helps. No markup or application gets a page in; Google's standard fundamentals do. In our data it names a business in 42.4% of answers and picks one in 12.7%.

In short
  • Google: AI Overviews is a snapshot with links, shown when its systems decide generative AI helps. No markup, files or application gets a page in.
  • In our data it names a business in 42.4% of answers, the most of five engines, and picks one in 12.7%, the least.
  • It cites youtube.com, reddit.com, facebook.com most: the only engine that puts social platforms first.
  • The business's own site is cited in 1.2% of its answers.

What is an AI Overview?

An AI-generated snapshot with key information and links to dig deeper.

Google Search Help, AI Overviews and AI Mode

That is Google's description. In practice it is a few paragraphs, sometimes a list, generated for the query and placed above the ten blue links, with a row of source links on the side or beneath. For a buyer's question such as "best accountant for freelancers in Rotterdam", it names some firms, says a sentence about each, and links to the pages it used.

When do AI Overviews appear?

You'll find AI Overviews in your Google Search results when our systems determine that generative AI can be especially helpful, for example, when you want to quickly understand information from a range of sources.

Google Search Help

So not on every query, and not predictably. Questions that ask for an explanation, a comparison or a shortlist draw them most. A business cannot make an overview appear; it can only be ready when one does, for the questions its buyers ask.

There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary. You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features.

Google Search Central, AI features and your website

Google adds that a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet, that crawling must be allowed, and that content should be findable through internal links. It also says AI features display "a wider and more diverse set of helpful links" than a classic search. That matches what we see: the links are not the top ten, and they lean on platforms.

All five engines, 7,552 answers, 35 businesses, 24 August to 7 October 2026. AI Overviews is measured on the Optimize plan, so its sample is smaller.

Two things stand out. AI Overviews is the most generous engine with names and the least willing to choose: it reads like a list, not a recommendation. And it cites the business's own site twice as often as the chat engines do, which is still only 1.2% of the time.

Platforms cited by AI Overviews across our answers, counted once per answer; listed only when answers about five or more businesses cite them.

YouTube, Reddit, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn: AI Overviews is the only engine in our data that puts social platforms first. ChatGPT and Gemini lean on Reddit and Wikipedia, Claude on Wikipedia and developer sites, Perplexity on Reddit, LinkedIn and finance pages. A business that wants to be in Google's overview needs a presence on the platforms Google's overview reads.

How to appear in AI Overviews

  1. Be indexable and snippet-eligible. Google's only stated requirement. Crawl allowed, no noindex, no nosnippet on the pages that answer buyer questions.
  2. Answer the question on the page. The question as the heading, the answer in the first sentences, evidence after. Google's helpful content guidance describes this page; so does every overview we have read.
  3. Be on the platforms it cites. A YouTube video that answers the question, a presence on Reddit threads where your market is discussed, a complete LinkedIn page, reviews on the directories of your trade. These are the pages the overview links.
  4. Be named by others. Being picked is rare (12.7%); being named is common (42.4%). Names come from third-party pages, so earn mentions on them.
  5. Measure the overview, not the rank. Ask Google your buyers' questions daily and read the overview. Search Console does not report what it said.

AI Overviews vs AI Mode

AI Mode is Google's conversational tab. Google's help page says you can transition from an AI Overview to a deeper conversation in AI Mode and ask follow-up questions. The overview is a summary of a results page; AI Mode is a dialogue. Vendors measure them as two engines, and Citeon AI does the same since 7 October 2026. The figures on this page are AI Overviews only.

How to measure it

For each buyer question, every day: was there an overview; did it name you; where; did it present you as the pick; which pages did it link. Keep the overview text so every score can be read back. Put the same question to the other engines on the same day, because they disagree (by how much). That is what the AI Overviews tracker records, and the free audit is the first run of it for three engines.

Questions people ask

What is Google AI Overviews?

Google's own words: an AI-generated snapshot with key information and links to dig deeper, shown in Search results when Google's systems determine that generative AI can be especially helpful. It sits above the standard results and links to the pages it drew on.

How do I get my site into AI Overviews?

There is no application and no markup. Google says there are no additional requirements beyond the standard search fundamentals: the page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet, crawling allowed, content findable through internal links. Then it comes down to being the kind of page Google would summarise and link, and to being present on the pages AI Overviews cites most, which in our data are YouTube, Reddit, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.

Does AI Overviews recommend businesses?

Rarely in our data. It names the business asked about in 42.4% of answers, the highest of the five engines we measure, but presents it as the pick in 12.7%, the lowest. It lists options; it seldom chooses one.

Is AI Mode the same as AI Overviews?

No. AI Overviews is the summary above the results. AI Mode is a conversational tab; Google lets you continue from an overview into AI Mode to ask follow-up questions. Vendors measure the two separately, and so does Citeon AI since 7 October 2026.

Does appearing in an AI Overview send traffic?

Google reports clicks and impressions from AI Overviews inside Search Console totals, not separately, so a site cannot isolate them there. What a site can measure is whether it is named and linked in the overview for the questions that matter, which is what an AI Overviews tracker does.

Can I opt out of AI Overviews?

Google says the standard preview controls apply: nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex. They also affect regular snippets, so opting out of the overview means opting out of the snippet too.
